The Big Crunch: British Elite Universities or French "Grandes Ecoles"?
We have examined salary and bonus data from 430 professionals working in front office for banks, asset manager, hedge funds or private equity funds.
We looked at all graduates from top UK universities and French Grandes Ecoles currently working in Financial Services jobs in London and Paris. We wanted to see which graduates earned the most, regardless of country of work, or professional specialism, ie: which universities led to the highest remuneration packages.
Key Highlights:
- Oxford tops the charts
- ESCP and EM Lyon sit lower down due to a high proportion of their graduates working in
central functions (Human Resources) and support roles rather than the higher earning
front office jobs - EDHEC is the suprise performer here with a strong 5th and 6th place, probably due to its
highly respected specialist Finance Masters degree - A higher proportion of French graduates work out of Paris where total compensation
packages are lower than in London
French Grandes Ecoles are well known for producing highly effective and technical graduates with extensive work experience vs. British graduates with short Summer internships and non-financial degree majors. Despite this, banks are still very keen to draw their intakes from both backgrounds as this create a positive and creative tension and complementing each other's skills.
